When I joined Toastmasters over 30 years ago, I had no idea it would change my life—not just as a speaker, but as a leader. My passion for leadership development wasn’t planned. When I joined Toastmasters over 30 years ago, it wasn’t to become a better leader. In fact, at the time, leadership felt like something far beyond my reach. I joined to overcome insecurity, organize my thoughts, communicate ideas effectively, and learn to project confidence. Leadership, I thought, was for someone else.
I was wrong. Leadership isn’t about titles or a final destination. It’s a journey that often begins without us even realizing it. Every effort we make to improve our social interactions becomes a foundation for leadership development. Each tap on the shoulder we receive from someone acknowledging a skill, talent or achievement is actually recognition of our leadership potential.
As a new Toastmaster and single parent struggling to make ends meet, my daily challenges often felt insurmountable.
Yet, those same struggles are now retold by my children as stories of adventure, resilience, and shared laughter that they now pass down to my grandchildren. Those moments taught me a valuable lesson: we lead simply by showing up and being present.
In the business world, the obstacles I faced often felt like insurmountable walls. But with determination—and the help of others pushing me forward—I learned to climb over those walls. Leadership isn’t just about individual grit; it’s about the momentum that comes from inspiring others through your journey. By persevering, we lead by example.
Over time, I’ve come to understand that true leadership is rooted in listening, empowering, and inspiring others. It’s about sharing knowledge and experiences to uplift those around us.
For over 30 years, this belief has shaped my work in Toastmasters, education, public service, and business management. Along the way, one truth has stood out: leadership is not an endpoint. It’s a journey of continuous growth, fueled by connection and the desire to help others reach their potential. Leadership is a team sport in which every member wins.
Running for International Director is an opportunity to further this journey—to stretch my skills, learn from an incredible global community, and continue inspiring others to discover their own leadership potential. I am excited for what lies ahead and grateful for every step that has brought me to this point.
Leadership is a shared experience, and I would love to hear your story. How has your journey shaped the leader you are today? Let’s keep the conversation going and inspire others to embrace their own leadership potential. Together, we can navigate this path and help others rise along the way.
